Biography
Matthew Scales, CFA, began his asset management career in 1994 with Putnam Investments. During his fifteen years with the firm, Matt held roles in both product and relationship management functions, ultimately becoming Senior Vice President , Team Leader for the Global & Non-US Equity and Currency Product Team. His time at Putnam also included overseas assignment in London and Sydney working with Putnam's European and Australasian institutional clients and alliance partners.
In 2009, Matt accepted a role as Client Advisor at Bridgewater Associates, one of the world’s most successful hedge fund managers. In this role he was responsible for working with institutional clients in North America on matters such as portfolio construction, the separation of alpha and beta, and portfolio risk decomposition. He also shared insights on Pure Alpha and All-Weather, Bridgewater’s diversified alpha and risk parity strategies.
In 2011, Matt joined Columbia Threadneedle Investments, ultimately rising to the role of U.S. Head of Product Development & Strategy. In this role he led a team of product experts in an effort to bring greater innovation to firm's investment strategies. This included the launch of new strategies such as Adaptive Risk Allocation and Multi-Asset Income as well as evolving existing traditional strategies to offer greater flexibility and higher alpha potential. In 2012, Matt authored the whitepaper, “Rethinking How We Invest,” that explored the concept of allocating risk as we build portfolios with greater diversification.
In 2016, Matt joined Wellington Management as an Investment Director in their Alternatives business. In this role, he represented a number of Wellington's hedge fund capabilities with clients and prospective clients, including Wellington’s original hedge fund strategy launched in 1994. Matt authored the whitepaper, “Equity long/short funds: Are the good times gone or does skill still matter?” (Jan 2017) and co-authored “Long/short investing in financials: Tapping into an industry renaissance” (Oct 2017).
After more than twenty-five years in the asset management industry traveling the world and working with clients across a variety of distribution channels, Matt founded Stagecoach Investment Consulting in 2018 with the primary purpose of helping clients build better portfolios. In 2020, Stagecoach became a registered investment adviser.
Matt earned his BA in economics from Rollins College, where he was also a member of the varsity baseball team. Matt earned his MBA in finance from Boston University, is a CFA charterholder, and a member of the CFA Society of Boston. He lives in Sudbury, Massachusetts with his wife and two boys.
